Gifted by Te Haa o te Whenua o Kirikiriroa, the name carries deep cultural and historical significance. Te Ara o Kaaroro is the traditional name of the area that extends along Newcastle Road towards Hamilton Zoo and Rotokauri.

The area is named after Chief Kaaroro of Ngaati Maahanga and Ngaati Hourua, whose pā once stood on the nearby ridge. Today, Te Kaaroro Nature Precinct continues to honour this connection to place by creating opportunities for people to discover, care for and connect with the natural world.
